In Cinemas: Detectives and Bladesmen

As well as China’s The Butcher, the Chef and the Swordsman, there are a couple of other Asian films hitting cinemas over the next month or so.

Richard at The Reel Bits kindly sent me the heads-up that Korean film Detective K: Secret of Virtuous Widow is on screens right now, but only at the Reading cinemas in Rhodes and Auburn in NSW. These things always sneak in under my radar. Detective K is a murder mystery with a period setting (see the poster to the right!), starring Kim Myung-Min, Han Ji-Min and Oh Dal-Su.

If you’re more into films featuring HK action star Donnie Yen — and there must be a lot of you, given his parade of leading roles lately! — we have The Lost Bladesman, another period martial arts film with a biographical turn. This one tells the story of Chinese general Guan Yu, and comes from writing and directing duo Alan Mak and Felix Chong (Infernal Affairs, Initial D, Confession of Pain). There’s an unsubtitled trailer up on Youtube here — it looks like it’s scheduled for release here in Australia on the 28th of April.
