This week in cinemas: ‘From Up On Poppy Hill’ (Japan, anime)

I’m a touch late on cinema releases this week — I blame the season, there’s too much running around to do this time of year!

Studio Ghibli fans that happen to live in a couple of Aussie cities have just under a week to catch their newest anime film in cinemas, From Up On Poppy Hill, directed by Goro Miyazaki and written by his father, Hayao Miyazaki.

Deni caught it at BIFF this year and has pronounced it a good ’un (review here), a feel-good “straight” story quite apart from the supernaturally- or fantasy-tinged work that Ghibli has put out over the last decade. Set in Yokohama in the ’60s, in a region recovering from war and preparing to host a forthcoming Olympics, the story follows two young students trying to save their school clubhouse from demolition.

This version is the English dub, showing on a very limited schedule (Sydney, Canberra and Brisbane only to Dec 24!) at the following cinemas:

  • Sydney: Dendy Newtown (Dec 20-24 only)
  • Melbourne: Cinema Nova
  • Perth: Luna Leederville
  • Brisbane: Dendy Portside (Dec 20-24 only)
  • Canberra: Dendy Canberra (Dec 20-24 only)

More information is available on distributor Madman’s page for the film.
