This week in cinemas: ‘Badges of Fury’ (China/HK)

Badges of Fury (Poster)According to the Facebook page for distributor Dream Movie, this Thursday 27 June sees the Australian cinema release for Chinese action film Badges of Fury starring Jet Li and Wen Zhang, who previously teamed up in drama Ocean Heaven and demon-hunting actioner The Sorcerer and the White Snake.

Directed by Wang Zi Ming, and with action direction in the capable hands of veteran Corey Yuen, the film looks like a buddy cop drama, with Li and Wen playing cops (grizzled and reckless, respectively) on the trail of a serial killer in Hong Kong.

This one will make Hong Kong action fans smile, too — as well as Jet Li, the cast for Badges contains Collin Chou (most known internationally for his role in the Matrix sequels, but he’s worked in HK since the late ’80s), Wu Jing (SPL, Shaolin), Stephen Fung and Leung Siu-lung. Rounding out the principal cast are Michelle Chen, Liu Shishi and Ada Liu.

Here’s a trailer, cut two days ago by Enlight Pictures, which suggest we’re getting both action and some considerable silliness:

Badges of Fury screens in Mandarin with English subtitles at Hoyts cinemas in most capital cities, and the Palace Nova Eastend in Adelaide. (We’re getting this one day and date with the HK release, still warm from the Chinese mainland release last Friday!)
