This week in cinemas: ‘The Admiral: Roaring Currents’ (South Korea)

The Admiral: Roaring Currents
The Korean Cultural Office Australia have announced on their Facebook page that smash-hit period war film The Admiral: Roaring Currents will be screening in Sydney at Event Cinemas George Street from this Thursday, September 18. Details are a bit thin, but my guess is that this is Sydney only for the time being, and it’ll be a short run — so get in there before it disappears, Sydney Korean cinema fans!

(Update: Village Cinemas has picked it up for release and will also be screening it at Century City in Melbourne from Thursday 25 September — details are here.)

By smash hit, I mean that this film is the brand new holder of the “biggest Korean film of all time” record, with more than 17 million admissions — well over US$100M of ticket sales domestically!

The movie is a period naval warfare flick, based on the events of the Battle of Myeongnyang in 1597 in which a small group of Joseon kingdom vessels held off a much larger Japanese fleet. Mentally I’m picturing a mashup of John Woo’s Red Cliff with Zack Snyder’s 300, though I’m betting we’ll get more realism than either in this particular film. It stars Choi Min-sik as the titular Admiral Yi Sun-sin and Ryu Seung-ryong as his opposite number, Japanese fleet commander Kurushima Michifusa.

Here’s a trailer:

See Event Cinemas’ page for the film for session details!
