LIFELINE (1997)

Firefighters rock, and this is the greatest movie about firefighters ever made.

Directed by Johnnie To (The Mission) and starring Hong Kong's Gary Cooper, Lau Ching-wan (Running Out of Time), this is an ode to the brave men and women whose job requires them to run into burning buildings and pull people out. The first half of this ensemble flick is all raw emotions, focusing on the lives of the men and women of a hard luck Hong Kong ladder company.

The second half follows them as they attempt the rescue of two civilians trapped in an epic blaze. This being Hong Kong, no one can afford special effects, so when you see actors on fire - those are real actors, that's real fire. It took six months to film and Hong Kong rescue workers were there every step of the way. Emotionally generous, bracingly real, and achingly beautiful this is a monumental tribute to the heroism of firefighters around the world.
