Opening Night!
SPIRITED AWAY
I failed to follow rule number 2 and ended up, you guessed
it, in the front row. Despite my vain efforts, I could not
make it to the opening night soiree which I’m sure went down
a treat. I wouldn’t know because by the time I arrived, the
staff was already packing up the champers and the sushi trays
had barely a garnish left on it.
Despite all that it didn’t deter me from enjoying this
amazing film.
Hayao Miyazaki’s films have always touched on themes of
spirituality and out-worldly forces: My Neighbour Totoro,
Nausicaa and more recently in Princess Mononoke. He
continues it here with his eagerly anticipated offering, Spirited
Away. Stunning
in its animation and thematic complexity, the film
nevertheless stuck true to what Miyazaki’s films have always
been about: excellent entertainment. It’s still an exciting,
rollicking adventure, filled with the most sublime mystical
gods, spirits, magical creatures of unrivalled creativity but
at the same time, Miyazaki does not deviate away from showing
you the grotesque or the unpleasantness of life.
Wonderful film, another worthy addition to Studio
Ghibli’s collection, the audience were pretty much stunned
into submission, as you would be when you are watching a film
of this calibre.
