TREE OF PALME
This was my second film at the Japanime and having learnt
my lesson, turned up early and found myself a comfortable
spot. With no expectations about what Tree of Palme was
about I was blown away by how extremely beautiful and stirring
it was. With imagery reminiscent of Miyazaki’s Nausicaa,
Tree of Palme is comparable in complexity, creativity
and the scenes are just pure eyecandy.
Palme, a wooden puppet made from a magical tree, is
entrusted with an important mission – to take a mysterious
blue capsule to another world. Along the way, Palme runs into
a group of street urchins [with an obvious reference to Oliver
Twist] who help him in his mission. Palme also develops a deep
longing to become human, falling in love with a young girl
called Popo and consequently endangering the mission he set
out to do.
The narrative itself, with its Pinocchio origins and many
subplots, is almost too convoluted at times but is saved by
the beautiful animation, a mixture of 3D and 2D.
I can see myself buying this on DVD and watching it without
the sound and be mesmerised by the images.
