Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival 2002

by Russell Edwards

Part 6: Epilogue

Just before I finish up this rave, a word about the festival's 200-strong army of volunteers. Decked out in light blue T-shirts adorned on the back with I Am A Volunteer (Staff often wore black T-shirts that read: I Am A Staff). Mostly students from Seoul, these selfless smurfs (blue t-shirts) were out on the streets come rain or shine, ensuring that public and press and guests alike were kept happy, had the right tickets, or were boarding the right shuttle buses for the four different venues (buses were running from all venues and ran a loop that included Songnae train station.).

Most of the volunteers couldn't speak English, but they knew their limitations and would get you someone who could speak some form of English quicker than I could name my top five Korean directors. Most festival guests were, Schatzberg aside, mainly first time film-makers. Each guest was issued with a translator, while lowly journalists just had to pick on whoever was handy.

If you were thinking of checking out the fest next year, I can guarantee that the volunteers make it an endearing experience. Prices of tickets varied from 4000 to 10,000 Won (four to ten bucks) and as a foreigner any reasonably well-mannered Caucasian would doubtlessly welcomed and could utilise any number of the services provided for festival guests. Though don't try and sneak in without ticket because the security is airtight - in fact don't even try sitting in the wrong numbered seat.

Closing Ceremony

With such an array of assistance available and the guests and journalists being casually thrown together, this is the most relaxed film festival I've been to. Combine that with a spectacularly high level of quality of films (congrats on excellent programming to Ellen Kim and Cassie Yoo) and the fact that there were representatives from Variety, Screen International, the Hollywood Reporter and the compulsory consultancy appearance from Sight & Sound's Tony Rayns (as well as yours truly on the Empire Australia ticket) it looks a cert that Pifan will stake a place as a prominent festival on the international circuit.
