Well, what is this anime about? When you mention Aliens and High School, you could be mistaken for expecting quite a different style of anime (Maybe that is just a guy thing) (Maybe it is just me?). If you have read some of Shizuru Hayashiya’s previous works such as Red Sister you could be mistaken for perhaps making a wrong assumption. This being his first attempt at a romantic comedy after a few darker, bloodier and quite violent series, I found myself quite enjoying Please Teacher.

The CPD’s (Convenient Plot Devices) of romantic comedies are there. With sad frequency of occurrence:

  • The love triangle – Between Kei, Mizuho and Koishi Herikawa.
  • The good friends – Kei has a few guy friends Koishi has a few female friends. They all spend time together. Kei being oblivious to the attentions being paid to him by Koishi, up to the point where their friends set them up for a date (which the jealous Mizuho follows them on, in classic stalker clothing). The uncle who is constantly being hit by his wife for ogling Mizuho.
  • The setting, which allows for strange happenings – using the CPD of the Mizuho moving in next door, and being his teacher. The school, where misunderstandings happen with scary regularity, getting trapped with each other, and many more.

One thing that got me, though, is the leap of logic that you have to take. I mean how does someone decide that to protect your (terribly) attractive alien teachers’ secret, you must marry her? Though the amount of times I have had to marry attractive aliens to protect their secrets is… Well, not something I should share, because they are secret.

I watched this DVD in both language formats, starting with the subbed, then the dubbed. I admit that I don’t really like dubbed anime, but strangely, I found myself not hating the voicing that was used in the English language version completely. They seemed to fit the characters, which is something that I must admit, the Dub companies are getting much better at, but I still felt that it was not as good as the original language version.

I am looking forward to see how the series progresses. With 4 volumes in the series, it should be an enjoyable ride, but is really nothing that has not been seen before.
