Hong Kong Roleplaying Game Links

Published Roleplaying Games, by system:

  • Hong Kong Action Theatre: the website of Guardians of Order, the publishers of HKAT. Has PDFs of the Introduction, Table of Contents and Character Sheet from the 2nd Edition.

  • Feng Shui: published by Atlas Games. Check out Burning Shaolin, a crossover d20 book.

  • Romancing Cathay: not published yet, but keep an eye on this upcoming Three Kingdoms RPG. The site contains their excellent PDF journal Revisiting the Three Kingdoms Quarterly.

  • Jadeclaw: an anthropomorphic roleplaying game (read: furry animals) set in a mythical China. The site has a terrific links page for books and movies about Chinese fantasy.

  • AD&D: Dragon Fist is a combination Hong Kong fantasy world and rules supplement for AD&D, available free online. You can download it from this site in PDF format.
(A print version revised for D20 is coming from Green Ronin press in July 2003).

  • Weapons of the Gods: an upcoming wuxia RPG from Eos Press based on Tony Wong's popular comic series published by Comics One. Looks promising.

  • Amber: Nine Princes in Hong Kong is a HK film- inspired Amber variant which runs annually at Ambercon North (Toronto, Canada). The site has background information on the setting.

Free Roleplaying Games, available online:

  • Once Upon a Time in China: Eric Yin presents a remarkable Chinese setting for use with Chaosium's Pendragon rules. His site also has many excellent essays about the wuxia genre. When this disappeared from the web, I was so bummed I offered to host it here on H-C.

  • Cathay Arts of Role Playing: A Chinese RPG-in-progress by Hong Kong gamer and author Leonard Hung. The site includes background and an extensive system summary, and is an intriguing glimpse at a genuinely Chinese take on the subject. Also check out his Yin Ma Shen Zhou (Fairy Land of the Drinking Horse) project.

  • Outlaws of the Water Margin: An original RPG by Paul Mason set in Mystical China of The Water Margin and Chinese Ghost Story. The rules are on-line - download and check 'em out!

  • Heroic Golden Turbulence: Aussie gamer Scott Beattie's original Hong Kong-styled RPG. The entire rules system is online, with a couple of scenarios. [Currently offline.]

Cool fan sites:

Further Links to Asian RPGs:

  • Lovely Asia: this is Kevin Poston's bibliography and compendium of links to every single RPG with an Asian setting. It's a terrific resource, and lists everything from AD&D Oriental Adventures through Ninjas and Superspies to GURPS China and beyond. I've kept my list to Hong Kong and wuxia related games, but Kevin has it all. Check it out!

Discussion Groups:

  • Dragons of the East: an eGroups mailing list for oriental roleplaying games with a historical and mythological slant.
