Shopping for HK
in Canberra

Mak has written this great guide to finding Hong Kong Movies in Canberra!

While we try to be as accurate as we can, the stores have the final word on prices and details.

If you know of any more places, please email the information to me and I'll add them here.

Center Cinema
Bunda Street, Canberra City
Tel: (02) 6249-7979

Website: http://www.electricshadows.com.au/

The Center Cinema is an arthouse cinema which occasionally screens a Hong Kong movie as its Friday night late show. These are listed on their home page (see above), and also on the Center Cinema page of this website.

Galaxy Video Rental
Unit 8/6 Cape Street, Dickson
Tel: (02) 6257-1054

These friendly people rent out ATV television series and HK flicks on VHS tapes (note that HK TV shows are not subtitled, alas). There is a one-time $30 deposit (refundable when you leave), and tape rental is $3.50, with a very flexible return time. They have a book of posters from which to choose tapes as well as the posters on the wall, which seems like a standard system for Chinese video stores Australia wide.

KC's Virtual Reality Cafe
11 East Row, Canberra City
Tel: (02)6257 5558

KC's has a huge range of Eastern Heroes/Made in Hong Kong video tapes for sale ($55 a pop) and more importantly (especially for my bank account) rental. They have a yearly membership fee of $35 for video hire, with tape rental at $5 a pop, overnight and weekly depending on the title. They also have VCDs for sale at $20-$25 and can help you order any title as long as it has been released. They also have PlayStation games and Manga videos for sale and hire. Oh yeah, they sell pizza etc to make up for the cafe title and have arcade games, a virtual reality machine, internet access etc etc, a bit of everything. You can also order HK film related books, a pretty cool place and the folks there are eager to please.

Movie Scene
Level 1 Shop T1c Bonner Crt, Woden
Tel: (02) 6260 4441

Rohan reports that you can buy Hong Kong tapes at this video store in Woden (Bonner court across from Woden plaza).

New World Video Ltd.
19 Woolley Street, Dickson
Tel: (02) 6257-5988

This Chinese video outlet is also the Sen Luxuriant General Store, so you can load up on videos and snacks in one hit! They carry Hong Kong movies and TVB television series on VHS tapes (once again, note that the TV series are not subtitled). There are plenty of movie posters on the wall to choose from, otherwise ask for the book of titles kept at the counter. A $30.00 deposit is required, which is refundable at any time, and there is a one-time $2.00 fee for your membership card. Hire is $3.50 per tape, with a 7 day return time on new releases and longer for older tapes.

This list of HK-related stores in Canberra has been contributed by Mak & Rohan for inclusion in the Hong Kong Movie Resource, a list of places to find HK film worldwide. Check it out, and contribute if you can.
