Dick Hunton's Top Ten Hong Kong Movies
In no particular order:
DRUNKEN MASTER - it's a toss up between number 1 and
number 2. Both are quintessential chop socky films. Number 2 has that insane stunt where
Jackie Chan leaps backwards onto a monster bed of red hot coals.... And from memory the
first one was filled with eye popping stunts performed with an amazing assortment of
furniture. (Maybe I'm thinking of Spiritual Kung Fu tho....)
BULLET IN THE HEAD - From the gang fight at the start
spliced with the wedding to the over-the-top finale complete with human skull this film
just does not stop...
MAN BEHIND THE SUN - I had the (mis)fortune of seeing
this one on the big screen. Very disturbing film about Unit 731 a Japanese medical
experimentation concentration camp in China during WW2. The camera lingers repulsively on
many of the horrific experiments. The decompression chamber and liquid nitrogen ones
spring to mind...
HARD BOILED - I think this was the first John Woo film I
saw on the big screen and it has left a permanent impression. Chow Yun Fat with baby under
one arm battles through an unbelievable array of beautifully choreographed spectacular gun
battles. Awesome stuff.
ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA - There's so many Jet Li films
to choose from, but I reckon this narrowly edges out Fong Sai Yuk and Fist of
Legend. Superb martial arts wire action and the fight scene in the warehouse towards
the end is awesome.
ENTER THE DRAGON - Awesome collision between Hong Kong
and Hollywood style film making. Bruce Lee is astounding as usual and Jim Kelly is pretty
cool also (love that afro!). The film is also a very interesting window back into 70s Hong
Kong when the city looked a lot different.
CHINESE GHOST STORY - Excellent ghost type stuff...
DAYS OF BEING WILD - So much rain....
ZU WARRIORS FROM MAGIC MOUNTAIN - Very cool epic fantasy
film with awesome mid-80s special effects. Storm Riders owes a lot to this film.
UNTOLD STORY - Anthony Wong chopping up the owners of a
restaurant and feeding them to the customers! You can't go wrong...
