Matthew Watson's Top Ten Hong Kong Movies
1. ASHES OF TIME
A masterpiece. A beautiful and stylish film, with a complex storyline that demands
numerous viewings before it starts to make sense. It is so rich with ideas - that I can
still find new things in it. This is more than just a film.
2. COMRADES, ALMOST A LOVE STORY
Leon Lai & Maggie Cheung in a romance film with a strong theme of
destiny/fate.
3. ANNA MAGDALENA
Takeshi Kaneshiro & Kelly Chen star in this wonderful off-beat romance. Even
Aaron Kwok isn't too bad in this film. A very cleverly and subtlely constructed film.
4. TREASURE HUNT
A very stupid action scene at the start of this film cannot ruin it... Because it contains
a load of beautiful comedy-romance scenes between Chow Yun Fat, Wu Chien Lien, and some
"Shaolin monks" in China.
5. CHUNGKING EXPRESS
I suppose this is a quirky cop-romance, but it's difficult to classify this film,
and it drips with charm.
6. FIST OF LEGEND
Jet Li remakes a Bruce Lee film. The fight scenes are exciting and quite brutal.
I feel like I've just had a massage after seeing this film.
7. HARDBOILED
Over-the-top gun action with a good dose of humour. People rave about Chow Yun
Fat, but Tony Leung Chiu-Wai steals the show.
8. BRIDE WITH WHITE HAIR
9. ROYAL TRAMP 1 & 2
Stephen Chow cracks me up. As the always smart-talking coward gets the girls to
do all the great acrobatic fighting for him.
10. A HERO NEVER DIES
