Chinatown Video releases for July 2000
Weasel Alert: I occasionally do a bit
of work for Chinatown Video.
BEAST COPS (1998) Rated MA. 110 mins.
Rental.
I've copped this one three times in the cinema, and each time liked it more and more.
It's a sort of Odd Couple, although being Hong Kong they go for an Odd Triple,
and make them cops (Cop Triple?). The cops in question are new-on-the-beat Michael
Wong, seedy-on-the beat Anthony Wong and oversexed informant
extraordinaire Sam Lee. When the local big brother (Roy Cheung)
has to take a powder, the new boy (Patrick Tam) steps up to the plate and
hell breaks loose. The cracking script delivers wit and fireaxes in equal measure, and the
film took home a swag of Hong Kong film awards. If you want to see where Hong Kong crime
film is at these days - more about the people, less about the choreography - then your
investigations start here.
A BETTER TOMORROW TRILOGY Boxed Set (1986 - 1989) Rated R. $37.95.
If you don't have the Better Tomorrow films yet, and I'm not
sure why you're at this site if you don't, then this is the deal for you. Woo's
ground-breaking 1986 classic, followed by his berserk 1987 sequel, followed by Tsui's
considered 1989 prequel. Chow Yun Fat and his magic toothpick stars in
each. One box, three tapes, lotsa bullets. Buy this sucker. (Note: ABT2 is the
Mandarin version.)
STREET ANGELS (1996) Rated MA. Rental.
$27.95
Sorry, haven't caught this one yet. Directed by Billy Tang, and stars Chingamy
Yau and Simon Yam, so it can't be all bad.
