Chinatown Video releases for June 1999
Weasel Alert: I occasionally do a bit
of work for Chinatown Video. This month I wrote the video cover blurbs for Super Lady
Cop and Hitman.
SUPER LADY COP (1992) Rated M. $29.95.
This is one silly movie. Nieh Ling (Cynthia Khan, from the In the
Line of Duty series) is a chemically-enhanced Chinese super agent. She's on the trail
of three similar super agents led by Coach (Yuen Wah) who have broken out
of the compound and headed off to Hong Kong for a life of super crime. As you do. All this
is license for some of the most outlandish spinning wire fu action you'll ever see. In
between there are patches of light romantic comedy as Ling becomes the object of affection
of sleazy cop Chui Shui (Alex Man), who in turn is the object of
affection of plucky teenager Yoki (Athena Chu). These segments are very
cheesy, but the videogame-style fight sequences are a hoot - it's not for nothing that
Yoki gives super-Ling the nickname "Chun Li".
HITMAN (1998) Rated M. 104 mins.
$29.95.
Jet Li's last Hong Kong movie maybe, at least since he's gone to
Hollywood to get his ass kicked by Mel Gibson (what's the world coming to, I tell you...).
This is a nifty action flick in which Jet plays a wannabe hitman. He has
an agent (Eric Tsang), he has a natty suit, he has a contract (to find
the King of Killers), he has a bad haircut; all he lacks is a single malicious bone in his
body, which makes him sort of underqualified. Check the Reviews
section for more, but note that my review was used as the basis for the text on the back
of the video cover. (Good thing I liked the film before Chinatown Video decided
to put it out, otherwise right now you'd be screaming "Weasel!")
SEX AND THE EMPEROR (1994) Rated R.
$29.95.
Another of those eunuchs 'n' concubine things. Add in imperial power struggles, secret
pleasure techniques, Yvonne Yung Hung, and the odd bit of torture, and
set on "steam" for 90 minutes.
