This week in cinemas: ‘SDU: Sex Duties Unit’ (Hong Kong)

Poster - SDU: Sex Duties UnitThis week’s Australian cinema releases bring this Cantonese sex comedy from Hong Kong director Pang Ho-cheung. Perhaps the best summation is the tagline from the promo material on the Palace Nova website:

This touching story is about Special Duties Unit Team B and their trip to Macau for a weekend of unadulterated debauchery.

The stars in flak jackets and jocks on the poster are Shawn Yue, Chapman To, Matt Chow and Derek Tsang.

Pang Ho-cheung is an interesting and fairly versatile director, and several of us here at HC love his first film, You Shoot I Shoot. Though there’s potential for satire here, given HK’s strong tradition of police films, my suspicion is that he is setting his sights a bit lower here and following up on last year’s Vulgaria, which Dream Movie also released in cinemas here.

SDU is released in Hoyts cinemas (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth) and the Palace Nova Eastend in Adelaide on July 25. More details are on Dream Movie’s Facebook page.
