Korean Film Festival in Australia 2014

KOFFIAIn one short week’s time the Korean Film Festival in Australia (KOFFIA) kicks off this year’s season of films in Sydney on August 13, to be followed by screenings in five other cities this year: Canberra, Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide!

The important dates are:

  • Sydney: Aug 13 – Aug 21
  • Canberra: Aug 13 – Aug 14
  • Brisbane: Aug 27 – Sep 2
  • Perth: Sep 3 – Sep 6
  • Melbourne: Sep 9 – Sep 16
  • Adelaide: Sep 23 – Sep 26

We’ve followed KOFFIA as it’s grown bigger and bigger over the last few years, and it always stands out as one of Australia’s most fun cinema festivals — their organisers and army of volunteers put on a great show, and it’s fantastic to have the opportunity to see a wide range of contemporary Korean cinema on the big screen.

Cold Eyes

Cold Eyes

This year, there are 20 feature films screening, plus a bunch of shorts, and everything screens with English subtitles. This year’s opening film is Cold Eyes (see Yee-yin’s review!), the well-regarded Korean remake of Hong Kong director Yau Nai-Hoi’s surveillance-themed police thriller Eye in the Sky.

Closing the festival is director Lee Joon-ik’s Hope, a drama adapted from a true story that focuses on the slow recovery of an eight-year-old girl after her rape at the hands of a drunk stranger; there’s a brief, distressing description of the real case at Wikipedia’s entry for the film.

Aside from Cold Eyes, the only other early review we can offer is Samson’s look at gangster flick New World, but we’ll do our best to cover as many as we can once things get rolling.

You can read about the whole line-up on the KOFFIA website, and tickets are on sale now. See you at the festival!
