Review: The Eagle Shooting Heroes (1993)

Apparently, this one was made in a break in the filming of Ashes of Time, with mostly the same cast, and mostly the same characters, but absolutely none of the same seriousness. It’s more wacky than a firkin* of very wacky things, and will make your brain revolve at speed.

There’s no way to adequately describe most of this, except to say that the costumes are lavishly satinned, the performances are lavishly over-the-top, and seeing this will possibly answer one of the great questions of life, the universe, and everything.

For those who need further convincing, here’s a few enticing details. The lovely Carina Lau Ka-Ling plays a disciple who’s in love with his master, Tony Leung Ka-Fai plays an almost-immortal who’s in love with someone he hasn’t met yet, and Tony Leung Chiu-Wai develops lips the size of sausages. Oh, and there’s a great scene, underscored by the theme of “Match of the Day” (the old English soccer TV programme), in which Leslie kicks around Big Tony’s head.

Honestly, see it if you ever get the chance. You’ll thank me for it. Well, at least, you’ll burble something, which I’ll take as thanks.

* Note: A firkin is a container, often used for wine, or other things that get stored in barrels. Google it if you don’t believe me!
