Shopping for HK
in Adelaide

CY has sent in this dandy list of places to find Hong Kong Movies in Adelaide! Jeff and Jez have added a few of their favourite spots!

While we try to be as accurate as we can, the stores have the final word on prices and details.

If you know of any more places, please email the information to me and I'll add them here.

88AV
122 Gouger Street, Adelaide
Tel: (08) 8231-8668
Website: coming soon!

Also known as Wong 88 Audio Vision Centre, they specialise more on electrical goods, VCD+DVD players etc... but they have a small selection of VCDs for $25 and up. [CY]

Academy Cinema City
20 Hindmarsh Square, Adelaide
Tel: (08) 8223-5000

Mainstream cinema which occasionally screens a Hong Kong Move midnight show on Saturdays (generally starting at 11:30pm). If you want to know what's on, check the Academy page on this site or call the cinema. [Mark]

Alpha Video
419 Magill Road, St Morris
Tel: (08) 8332-9270
Ingle Farm Shopping Centre
Montague Rd., Ingle Farm
Tel: (08) 8265 1313

My fave. It's a mainstream video store but they stock a larger selection of HK/Asian movies than most. From your rudimentary action HK flicks to arthouse. Not the most recent ones, you realise, but still a lot better than your average Blockbuster. They also have a good section of Japanese anime/manga. I go to the St Morris store, but I presume that the Ingle Farm store has a similar range.  [CY]

Asia Records
Hanson Road

This place offers LDs, VCDs and DVDs for rent. I don't know how big their range is but from their name, I assume they must offer mostly HK (& possibly other Asian) items. LD hire is $5.00 per night. [Jez]

Atlantic Video
358 Main North Road, Blair Athol
Tel: (08) 8349 8555

This mainstream store has a reasonable but small number of old Shaw Brothers-type historical actioners and D&B-type actioners from the mid-seventies up to late-eighties. These are dubbed into English. You have to hunt for them through their general movie section. It's worth doing if you're patient. The other two Atlantic Video outlets at Semaphore and Smithfield Plains may also be worth careful inspection. [Jeff]
Update: For the last year Atlantic have had a fairly good selection of HK videos - they seem to have just about everything put out by Chinatown Video. [Chris]

Bao Lien Video
56 Hanson Road, Woodville Gardens
Tel: (08) 8243-0009

This place offers tapes of HK movies and TV serials that have been dubbed in Vietnamese. Tape hire is $3.00. [Jez]

Chinatown Bookshop
118 Gouger Street, Adelaide
Tel: (08) 8231-7336

It's the only mainstream Chinese bookshop actually. Cantopop CDs, knick knacks, baby posters etc. plus laser discs for hire. There are deposits, membership fees etc... for hiring. [CY]

Cuu Long Video
Hanson Road, Kilkenny

This place offers a large range of HK movies that have been dubbed in Vietnamese. I believe they have the OUATIC series and Jet Li's other recent films. Mind you, dubbing with Vietnamese is delayed by more than twelve months for HK movies so 1998 items like Hitman may not be available yet. This place also offers a wide range of tapes of TV serials from TVBI, ATV, Taiwan, Mainland China, Singapore, etc. that have been dubbed in Vietnamese. They also offer VCDs and DVDs for rent. Tape hire is $3.00. [Jez]

Kino at Hyde Park
114 King William Road, Hyde Park
Tel: (08) 8373-1635 Fax: (08) 8373-1304

More of your arthouse video store. Don't think you'll find Stephen Chow's movies if you catch my drift. More Chen Kaige than Wong Jing. Nevertheless, worth a look. [CY]

Minh Tien Video
16 Hanson Road, Kilkenny

Formerly known as Thu Kieu Video, this place offers tapes of HK TV serials mainly from TVBI and ATV that have been dubbed in Vietnamese.  They sometimes have the occasional Singaporean or Taiwanese TV serials as well as a limited number of HK movies - all dubbed. Tape hire is $3.00. [Jez]

Movieland
6/53 Grange Road, Welland
Tel: (08) 8340-0411

This mainstream video store is by reputation as good as Alpha Video, Magill Road. [Jeff]

Movie Mart
1/53 Grange Road, Welland
Tel: (08) 8340-0499

This is a good place to buy Siren's Chinatown and Classic Hong Kong Videos. They offer a small discount on most tapes sold and have discount sales on a fairly regular basis. [Jeff]

Ngai Sing AKA New Star Video
California St. North (off 65, Grote Street)
Tel: (08) 8231-6713

The video store in Chinatown, just 'bout everybody hires from here. Pretty up to date with TVB serials and movies. Quality can vary but it's the only store in Adelaide that caters fully Cantonese serials/movies. They have books of reproductions of film posters and they hang posters of the more recent films on their walls. Rental prices are $3.50 per tape or $3.00 for old (they have to be reeeeally old) ones. Deposit is $20.00 per tape, or membership is $30.00. Opening hours are 10:00am weekdays, 11:00am Saturdays, 1:00pm Sundays & public holidays. Closes at 6:00pm. Grote St. is a major road and leads to the markets and chinatown so it's not that hard to find. California St. North is clearly marked as well. [CY]

Saigon Video
40c Hanson Road, Woodville Gardens
Tel: (08) 8347 1797

A Vietnamese video rental store. The people are friendly here. Many of their videos are or were ex-New Star Video's tapes. [Jeff]
This used to be a Vietnamese video rental place but it is now owned by Chinese owners, and now only offers full Cantonese and Mandarin (subbed and unsubbed) TV serials and movies - No vietnamese videos at all. They rent tapes, VCDs and DVDs of TV serials, movies and karaoke from HK and China. They also sell some movie posters, TV posters, audio CDs, VCDs and possibly DVDs. Tape hire is $3.50 per night. [Jez]

Plus:

Other stores can be found around the suburbs populated by the Vietnamese community, eg Prospect, Westfield, Arndale. If anyone has any details, please send them in!

This list of HK-related stores in Adelaide has been compiled by CY and added to by Jeff for inclusion in the Hong Kong Movie Resource, a list of places to find HK film worldwide. Check it out, and contribute if you can.
