Survive Style 5+ (2004)
Survive Style 5+ is one crazy movie. Containing some of the strangest ideas ever put on film, it really offers quite a wild ride. How much you enjoy the ride though will depend on whether you can accept the many bizarre plots, wacky characters and at times a lack of logic. Yes, it is very weird, but if you are prepared to put to sleep those parts of your brains responsible for logical thinking, you will be in for one … (read more)

Kamui (2009)
There are levels of disappointment in this world. We all should know this by now. Finding out your latest crush is not at all like you thought is somewhere around the level of a mild case of indigestion. Not getting that pay rise you’d hoped for registers somewhere around that punch-to-the-gut level. Discovering the last Tim Tam is gone is upping the ante somewhat to the equivalent of a great gaping hole in existence, worse if it directly follows the … (read more)

Ocean Waves (1993)
For all lovers of Asian films and anime, the mention of the name Studio Ghibli should automatically bring up in their minds colourful images of mythical creatures, epic battles and magical adventures. So I must begin this review by telling you this: while Ocean Waves was in fact made by Studio Ghibli, it features none of the above. So please don’t expect it to resemble a Miyazaki classic, or you will be very, very disappointed. What this well-made little film … (read more)

Jing: King of Bandits – Seventh Heaven (2004)
Jing: King of Bandits is an anime series about the adventures of a young bandit called Jing. Known for its fun and humour, the series is liked by many, although it is not as popular or well-known as many other animes. Jing: King of Bandits – Seventh Heaven is an original video animation (OVA) that tells of another one of Jing’s adventures.
Jing, a bandit boy wonder, together with Kir, his wisecracking parrot sidekick, have been arrested and sent to … (read more)

Suicide Club (2001)
Those of our readers who are familiar with Japanese cinema should be no strangers to gory films from Japan. Suicide Club, which I am going to be reviewing here, is one such example. However, in contrast with recent popular gore-packed films such as The Machine Girl, Tokyo Gore Police and Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl, which are all way over-the-top in their handling of violence and have premises that are unlikely to happen in the real world, … (read more)
