Asian Cinema at the Melbourne International Film Festival 2015

It’s a little over two weeks until the 2015 edition of MIFF kicks off, and I don’t have enough time this year, sadly, to do a full rundown of every film from Asia showing at the festival like I did for SFF. Nonetheless, it would be remiss of me not to post about a few highlights; here’s a short rundown from my perusal of the program.

It’s jam-packed, as usual: the Accent on Asia stream alone has twenty-two films listed, … (read more)

Asian Cinema at the Melbourne International Film Festival 2014

It’s MIFF time, everyone! The venerable Melbourne Film Festival has released their program for this year’s event, and as always it’s crammed with cinema from Asia, from horror classics from Hong Kong (which have their own stream this year, A Perfect Midnight: Haunted Hong Kong) to gritty noir or modern arthouse.

Asian Cinema at the Melbourne International Film Festival 2013

Hot on the heels of SFF comes Australia’s biggest film fest, the Melbourne International Film Festival. Their full program has just been announced, and as usual there’s a pretty packed slate of Asian cinema, from their regular Accent on Asia strand to special looks at new Arabic and rarely-seen North Korean cinema!

I’ve put together a quick overview of the feature films on show from Asia, since that’s what we’re primarily interested in here at Heroic Cinema. Obviously there are … (read more)

MIFF 2012: Accent on Asia

Headshot

There’s less than a week to go until the Melbourne International Film Festival opens (on the 2nd of August), and I’ve been lazy and not posted a roundup of the Asian cinema showing this year.

It’s not so bad, though: they’ve done the work for us and collected it all into their Accent on Asia programme — the official roundup is here.

Here are a few highlights: … (read more)

‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ in Melbourne for MIFF 2012

Our stats since the Sydney Film Festival suggest that a few people have hit the site looking for release info on Indian epic Gangs of Wasseypur in Australia. I’ve done some digging myself, and it doesn’t look like there’s a real Aussie release confirmed, but I thought I’d share this litte update: the Melbourne International Film Festival’s direct from Cannes update states that they’ve programmed both Part 1 and Part 2 of Wasseypur for their festival in August.

So, if … (read more)

MIFF 2011 rolls onwards

I do hope Melbourne readers are getting stuck into MIFF this year — there’s a lot on show, and they’ve filled out their schedule with a bunch more Asian films since I wrote up our little summary of their First Glance list. You can see the full program at the MIFF site, but there are a few films of interest that I thought I’d make particular mention of.

Firstly, for those who want a chance to catch some bona fide … (read more)

Note that there’ll be more on the way soon… the full program is released in July, and we’ll post an update with any further announcements then!
