Asian cinema at the Sydney Film Festival 2011
Sydney people needn’t be too jealous of MIFF-going Victorians this year — our own film festival starts in a couple of days, and has a bunch of films from Asia showing as well.
Here’s a quick roundup of what SFF is serving up this year; as always, check the official program for the real deal in case I’ve made a mistake or the schedule changes.… (read more)

MIFF 2011: First Glance
The Melbourne International FIlm Festival (21 July to 7 August this year) have unveiled the “First Glance” at their program and, as usual, films from Asia are well-represented. Here’s a short rundown — you should check their website for full details. Note that there’ll be more on the way soon… the full program is released in July, and we’ll post an update with any further announcements then!
MIFF have an “Accent on Asia” track this year, and so … (read more)
AIFF 2011 Coming Soon
Late Feb brings festival season to Adelaide, and the program is huge. I’ve not had a chance to look over the full list (we’ll try and write up a preview shortly!) but a few things that fall squarely into Heroic Cinema’s purview jump out of the list at me:
- Cold Fish (Japan, 2010, dir: Sion Sono)
The most recent film from controversial director Sion Sono (Strange Circus, Suicide Club), and it looks like a winner. - God of

14th Japanese Film Festival 2010 Preview

Whether you are in the mood for something inspirational (Feel the Wind), delicious (Flavor of Happiness), bittersweet (Solanin) or suspenseful (Zero Focus), it is guaranteed that you will not be disappointed. Plus there are … (read more)
Let’s get MIFFed!
It’s certainly been too long in between yum-chas since the last Heroic Cinema MIFF reports! I hope those of you in Melbourne are braving the wintry conditions to sample some of the goodies on offer – it will warm your head, heart and get your pulse pumping!
I kicked off MIFF 2009 with the sublime All Around Us by Ryosuke Hashiguchi. Seemingly just an exploration of a couple’s evolving relationship over time, (like all good films) it is actually much … (read more)
Back to the source: MIFF 2009
It’s great to be back at MIFF after a hiatus of a few years. Since James Hewison stepped off the chair in 2006, I’ve found little in the program to fire up my genre-loving senses; in my uninformed view, there seemed to be too much unwatchable introspection and not enough raging gunfights. However, this year the program has ratcheted up many a notch, so I’m off to the movies for a week.
Things I’ve missed about MIFF: talking to complete … (read more)
Supanova 09 – Brisbane report
I have to admit, I rocked up to my first ever Brisbane Supanova thinking it’d be somehow a little bit less than the Sydney version I went to last year. Not so. Definitely not so. And I’m not about to say anything that possibly everybody but me already knew – Brisbane Supanova is huge, and these days I think you’d be hard pressed to find the sci-fi and Western comics in amongst the anime and manga fans without deliberately … (read more)
