Sakuran (2007)
If Sakuran was a person, it would be the kind of person other people write songs about; quirky and vital and brave, marching to the beat of a drum no one else hears; charming and impossible to dislike, drawing everyone in like moths to a flame which is in the end gone far too soon.
Which sounds like a cliché (or a 70’s rock star) and in fact is. At first, Sakuran seems to be all about style and nothing … (read more)

Witchblade (2006)
For a change of pace now, instead of reviewing an anime series based off a popular manga series, I’m going to review an anime series based off an American comic. After seeing one episode of this anime re-imagination of the original comic – the main character, location and plotting has been changed – I wanted to love the show. It really felt like something I could enjoy; unfortunately as I kept watching I felt less inclined to keep watching.
It … (read more)

Naruto the Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow (2004)
Naruto the series has been such a hugely popular anime series that most of our readers would have seen at least a couple of episodes, and hence need no introduction to Naruto or Team 7. For those unfamiliar with the series, Naruto is a young ninja from the Hidden Village of the Leaf, who aspires to become a Hokage, the highest ranking ninja. He is a member of Team 7, together with fellow ninjas Sasuke, Sakura and team leader Kakashi. … (read more)

Death Note: the Movie (2006)
The problem with the really, really cool manga is that sooner or later, someone is going to turn it into an anime series.
Actually, this isn’t the problem. The problem is that sooner or later, the anime is going to be turned into a live action movie. Why the problem? Well, let’s just say the track record for good screen adaptations of brilliant manga are pretty few and far between and not only because very few manga can make a … (read more)

Reincarnation (2005)
Ah, The Ring. The film that drew our collective attention to Japanese horror after being desensitised by rivers of blood and latex gore. It took a slow moving, internalised film to really bring back that sense of dread that made you sleep just that little less soundly than before. And we were hardly disappointed — soon what followed were films like Ring 2, Dark Water and The Grudge (though admittedly I wasn’t that big a fan of that … (read more)

Elemental Gelade (2005)
Two weeks ago I claimed I would never pick a disc to review based off the title alone again. It’s quite odd that the system of random luck of picking based off the title alone got me the massive dud School Rumble and also this standout title Elemental Gelade. Based on the manga of the same name, Elemental Gelade, may hit some of the same notes and themes present in the fantasy genre, yet still maintains enough freshness … (read more)

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle (2005)
2008 – for bizarre mathematical reasons that are way beyond me – might be the year time travel is invented, or mulitverses are discovered. The largest particle smasher the world has ever seen is being booted up in Switzerland in May, and physicists the world over are so excited by the incredible, almost unimaginable possibilities that could result from experiments in this accelerator that they can barely contain themselves.
It’s a pretty exciting prospect, that they might discover six impossible … (read more)
